About this ReportThis is American Water’s first biennial corporate responsibility report. This report was published in June, 2011 and covers our corporate responsibility performance for the 2010 Fiscal Year, which ran from January 1 to December 31. American has previously published a Corporate Responsibility Brochure as well as responses to a set of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 metrics , but going forward this performance information is being integrated into regular corporate responsibility reporting. The data in this report covers all of our regulated operations and where relevant, we include data from our market-based businesses as well. We have used the GRI G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines to inform the development of this report. As part of this effort, we used GRI’s Reporting Principles of materiality, sustainability context, stakeholder inclusiveness and completeness in selecting content for the report. Additionally, we used the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility Liquid Assets report to guide reporting and indicators specific to the water industry. We are self-declaring this report at GRI Application Level B. American Water did not use an external agency to audit the content of this report; however, the data contained in this report was generated using systems audited by our internal audit staff. Preparing this report is a valuable opportunity for us to assess and improve upon our corporate responsibility progress and performance. To continue to do so, we welcome your feedback.
