New Jersey American Water Recycles Water Treatment Residuals

During the water treatment process, sediment that is removed from the raw and treated water is referred to as treatment residuals. On a dry weight basis, 90 percent of the water treatment residuals are beneficially used. Learn more...

New Jersey American Water Receives Environmental Stewardship Award from NJDEP

In March 2008, New Jersey American Water’s staff at its Delran, Raritan-Millstone and Canoe Brook water treatment facilities received certificates of recognition from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) for meeting the requirements of their Environmental Stewardship Initiative.

The NJDEP program, which was launched in January 2008, recognizes businesses for:

  • implementing programs and activities that benefit the environment
  • going above and beyond the minimum regulatory requirements
  • incorporating stewardship initiatives as part of daily operations

New Jersey American Water was recognized for maintaining an Environmental Policy and participating in the Environmental Management System/Audit program at both facilities.

The company was also recognized for its involvement in community activities. At Raritan-Millstone, this included actively participating in New Jersey Water Supply Authority’s (NJWSA) River Friendly Program at the site for wildlife and habitat enhancements and supporting the Charles Rogers Bird Sanctuary in Princeton. At Canoe Brook facility, the team received kudos for its involvement in GeesePeace and DeerPeace initiatives.

We Are Committed to Protecting the Environment

The American Water team is committed to protecting the environment, and to finding ways to use our most precious resource wisely. As we work to provide water and wastewater services to our customers, we also work to prevent pollution, promote sustainability, and enhance the natural environment.

We have a consistent history of complying with, and in many cases surpassing, the standards set by environmental laws and regulations. In fact, this is the foundation on which we build our environmental performance. We strive to not just meet, but exceed the environmental expectations of our stakeholders and establish new benchmarks by which others in our industry will be measured.

Over the past several years American Water has been the recipient of 150 awards from state and federal regulators, industry organizations, and communities for superior water quality. In addition, we have received 65 Directors' Awards from the Partnership for Safe Water program sponsored by six government and environmental agencies, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Our commitment to the environment extends beyond the quality of our water into the heart of who we are - your local water company. We are stewards of the communities we serve, and we are proud of the role we play in protecting your surroundings.
