California American Water is partnering with the City of San Diego and San Diego County Water Authority on a new Sustainable Landscapes Program, which offers incentives to promote landscape improvements based on the latest sustainable practices. As part of the program, qualified applicants can receive up to $5,250 max ($1.75 per square foot up to 3,000 sq. feet ) to replace water-intensive turf grass with a more sustainable landscape.

A sustainable landscape starts with a watershed approach and considers every garden as though it were a mini-watershed, holding on to or cleaning all the water that falls on it and nurturing a diverse habitat of plants and insects. Then turn your attention to building healthy living soil, selecting climate-appropriate plants, and learning ways to efficiently water your landscape with both rainwater and irrigation. A native landscape requires 77 % less water, produces 66 % less green waste, and costs 68 % less for maintenance than a traditional garden. Properly selected and placed plants can lower home heating and cooling costs by as much as 20%.  The San Diego Sustainable Landscapes Program is the go-to resource to assist San Diego County residents in adopting sustainable landscaping best practices through education and training, technical assistance, landscaping materials and financial incentives.
