American Water’s Environmental Policy states our commitment to the efficient use of natural resources in our operations, including minimizing resource consumption and waste production in capital projects and new construction, promoting recycling, and working to recover energy from wastes.
“Residuals” are by far our largest waste stream and comprise the waste product from water treatment where the silt and sediment is removed from the raw water. Of this amount, a portion is in our “non-regulated” market-based business for which we will engage the client on options for beneficial use of the residuals.
Of the remainder that is under the direct control of our regulated operations, we land apply as “clean fill”. A minimal amount is sent to landfill. Our goal is to continue to reduce this amount. The remainder of the residuals is either disposed to a sewer system or back to the receiving waters – all under permit by the state environmental agencies.
