Our States & Subsidiaries

We operate as regulated utilities in approximately 1,600 communities in 16 U.S. states and follow environmental and health and safety regulations set by local authorities and federal standards. Our primary operating assets include approximately:

  • 81 surface water treatment plants
  • approximately 49,000 miles of mains and collection pipes
  • 500 groundwater treatment plants
  • 1,100 groundwater wells
  • 100 wastewater treatment facilities
  • 1,200 treated water storage facilities
  • 1,400 pumping stations
  • 81 dams

We are actively involved in helping to maintain our water infrastructure and we invest approximately $1 billion annually into our systems to ensure continued reliability for our customers, who count on us every day. In most of our service areas, high-quality water service still costs about or less than a penny per gallon. Our regulated subsidiaries are subject to economic regulation by state public utility commissions (PUCs). That means that in each state we operate, water quality and service rates are subject to extensive regulation by state PUCs, as well as environmental, health and safety and water quality regulations by federal, state and local governments. Our vast network of treatment plants, pumping stations, storage facilities, and approximately 45,000 miles of main and collection pipe, are all put to work each day to provide our customers with the highest-quality service.

Market-Based Systems

In addition to our regulated operations, we also provide complementary services through our Market-Based businesses that leverage our core competencies, but do not involve ownership of assets.

Our Market-Based operations under the company’s American Water Enterprises subsidiary include three lines of business under our American Water Enterprises subsidiary, and one through an additional subsidiary, Keystone Clearwater Solutions.

Contract Services Group: provides water and wastewater management solutions for municipal and industrial clients and sometimes including a financing component. The company pioneers solutions for optimizing the total water cycle, turning liquids, solids and gases to its customers' advantage. These are generally known as Public-Private Partnerships.

Military Services Group: works with the United States Military to treat and supply water and to collect and treat wastewater for military installations all over the country as part of the federal government’s Utility Privatization Program.

American Water Resources: provides warranty services to homeowners and smaller commercial establishments to protect against the cost of repairing broken or leaking water pipes and clogged or blocked sewer pipes on their property, and other related service plans. We also partner with municipalities who find value in offering these services to their communities.

Keystone Clearwater Solutions: headquartered in Hershey, Pa., Keystone Clearwater Solutions is a water logistics service provider offering a range of water related services to the oil and gas industry primarily in the Appalachian region of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
