Iowa American Water Acquires Blue Grass Water System and Approximately 650 New Customers

DAVENPORT, IA (June 8, 2017) – Iowa American Water announced today the company’s acquisition of the City of Blue Grass, Iowa’s water system. The purchase of the water system adds approximately 650 customers to the company’s customer base. The city of Blue Grass’ population is about 1,600 residents; it is located approximately 10 miles west of Davenport.

In a special election referendum last year, Blue Grass voters overwhelming supported the sale of their water system to Iowa American Water with an 86% approval rating. “We look forward to serving the residents of Blue Grass as their new local water service provider,” said Randy Moore, president of Iowa American Water. “We want residents to know that we sincerely appreciate their cooperation during this transition period. We will work hard every day to provide them with the high-quality water and exceptional customer service they expect and deserve.” Moore noted that Iowa American Water will continue to work in partnership with Blue Grass officials who have helped make this successful public-private partnership a reality.

Since existing Blue Grass meter reading equipment and billing systems are compatible with Iowa American Water’s equipment, Blue Grass residents will keep their existing water meters. Residents should expect to receive their first bill from Iowa American Water during the last week of June.

“Today’s sale of the Blue Grass water system to Iowa American Water is a step forward for our city,” said Blue Grass Mayor Tim Brandenburg. “With all of the water quality regulations and challenges water suppliers today must deal with, this sale is the best long-term, permanent and reliable solution to address Blue Grass’ water supply needs. Iowa American Water’s only business is water, so we’re joining with the water experts.”

“Iowa American Water already provides water to several communities in eastern Iowa, so this is a good fit for us and a continuation of our efforts to expand our presence across Iowa,” added Moore. “In a time when communities are looking for new and innovative ways to deal with challenges they’re facing and hold the bottom-line on expenses, this acquisition is a great solution for the community of Blue Grass and its residents. Iowa American Water brings a broad range of experience, resources and knowledge to the community through this acquisition.”

Effective today, new customers can contact the company with any service requests or questions at 1-866-641-2108.

Iowa American Water is purchasing the Blue Grass water system for $1.3 million.
