ANNUAL SYSTEM FLUSHING PROGRAM

Dateline City:
LEXINGTON, Ky.

Dear Community Official:

This is to advise you of Kentucky American Water’s upcoming water distribution system “flushing” activities occurring this spring. Our flushing program involves simultaneously opening several fire hydrants in an area to increase water flows and therefore clean water mains of any mineral deposits and sediment that may have built up since our last flushing activity. This is a key effort that enables us to continue providing excellent quality water to our customers.

Fayette County’s distribution system will be flushed in the evening and early morning hours beginning April 23 to May 6.

Owen County flushing will be April 23 through 30. Flushing activity will occur during normal business hours.

Scott County flushing will occur May 8 through 14. Flushing activity will occur during normal business hours.

Clark County flushing will occur May 15 - 19. Flushing activity will occur during normal business hours.

Millersburg’s flushing will occur May 18 – 21.

Just before this flushing effort, Kentucky American Water will temporarily switch disinfectant used in the water treatment process from chloramine to free chlorine, which has a more noticeable smell. Therefore, customers may notice a more significant chlorine smell in the water from April 20 to May 22. This is normal and not harmful. Although the chlorine smell may be more apparent, the level of chlorine in the water remains the same. If the chlorine odor is too strong, customers can reduce it by placing water in a glass container in the refrigerator overnight uncovered.

It’s possible that customers may also experience a slight discoloration of their water when crews are working in their areas of town. Should a customer notice discolored water coming from the tap, they should simply run their cold water faucet until the water clears.

The water remains safe to consume, but customers may want to avoid such activities as washing clothes when crews are flushing in their areas, since there is potential for discolored water that could stain clothing.

Customers have been notified via bill insert regarding the flushing program. As an added convenience, an interactive map is also available for them to view online to determine when we will be flushing in their areas. The map is available at https://tinyurl.com/kb7t85v .
