Water Provider Urges for Reduction in Lawn Irrigation Use During Peak Demand
MERRICK, NY (July 18, 2018) – Due to a mechanical issue at one of the area’s pumping wells, New York American Water has issued Water Use Restrictions for its customers in the Wantagh and Seaford communities that are north of the Southern State Parkway and east of the Wantagh Parkway. This is strictly a precautionary measure to ensure water supply needs can meet the high demand for water driven by lawn irrigation systems during stretches of warm, dry weather. The company stresses that this is a peak demand issue and at no time has water quality been impacted or compromised.
“We recognize the inconvenience and appreciate our customers’ cooperation during this time,” said Moses Thompson, New York American Water’s Vice President of Operations. “However, it is critical during this hot, dry weather to reduce outdoor water use so that we can ensure water supplies and pressures are consistently available for fire protection and basic household consumption.”
The New York American Water team is working diligently to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and expects the issue to be resolved within a week’s time. While the well remains offline, customers in the impacted area are asked to limit their outdoor water usage as follows:
No water use for irrigation, lawn watering, or other outdoor use unless via a handheld watering can.
No vehicle washing, no driveway washing.
No refilling of fountains or decorative ponds.
No filling or topping off of pools.
All customers are encouraged to check the New York American Water website (http://www.amwater.com/nyaw) for up-to-date information. Notifications will be sent to customers once the restrictions have been lifted. If customers have additional questions or concerns, they are encouraged to call customer service at 877-426-6999.
