Merrick, N.Y. (June 7, 2019)—Through its partnership with the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC-NY), New York American Water recently awarded Jessica Jurcsak of Merrick a scholarship amounting to $3,000. This is the eighth consecutive year that New York American Water has offered scholarships to high school students within its service area who are passionate about the water industry.
“We congratulate Jessica on all of her achievements, both academically and through her connection with the community through soccer,” said Lynda DiMenna, president of New York American Water. “We wish her the best of luck as she continues her education and pursues a career that will give back to the water industry and support our communities.”
Jessica is a senior at Wellington C. Mepham High School, and she is one of five recipients of this scholarship throughout the New York American Water Service area. She will be attending SUNY Binghamton in the fall and will be studying environmental engineering.
While attending Wellington C. Mepham High School, Jessica was heavily involved in extracurricular activities including the National, English and World Language National honor societies, and was an AP Scholar. She served as an orthodontic lab assistant at Gottesfeld-Ciccone Orthodontics and was a volunteer at Suydam Physical Therapy, where she interacted with patients, assisted with patient set-up and observed various PT treatments. Jessica played varsity soccer and was the Merrick travel soccer captain, and she gained leadership experience coaching 5 and 6 year-old children basic soccer skills at the Merrick PAL enrichment soccier program. She gained more leadership experience by coaching at the North Bellmore SEPTA Special Olympics Program.
