Hewlett, NY (June 12, 2019) – New York American Water is investing $970,000 to install new water main along Hewlett Parkway, Westervelt Place and Wheatley Street in Hewlett. The project, scheduled to begin June 12, will help to address discolored water caused by aging unlined cast iron pipe and includes replacing approximately 2,560 feet of two- and six-inch water main installed in 1924 with new eight- and 16-inch ductile iron water main. The project will also replace six fire hydrants and 70 utility-owned service lines.
“Water main replacement projects are vitally important to reinforcing our water distribution system and improving our water quality,” said New York American Water Manager of Engineering John Kilpatrick. “Aging water mains are a leading contributor to discolored water and we dedicate a substantial portion of our capital plan budget for these system improvements.”
This main replacement project will take place along Hewlett Parkway from West Broadway to Waverly Avenue, Westervelt Place from Mill Road to Hewlett Parkway, and Wheatley Street from Mill Road to Hewlett Parkway. Work is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete. Final street restoration will be completed by the Town of Hempstead after the replacement water service lines to each home have been installed and all work has passed all required quality tests from the Nassau County Department of Health.
Work will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Residents should note that sections of the street where construction is taking place may be closed to traffic during these working hours. New York American Water will coordinate with residents along Hewlett Parkway, Westervelt Place and Wheatley Street to minimize disruptions.
