Merrick, NY (October 21, 2019) – New York American Water will be hosting a Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Merrick Gazebo—located on the corner of Broadcast Plaza and Merrick Avenue. The Prescription Drug Take Back Day will provide New York American Water’s Long Island customers with an opportunity to safely and easily dispose of unwanted or expired medications.
“We hope that the day’s event will provide our customers with a venue for safe disposal of unwanted prescription drugs and help raise awareness about the importance of protecting our water supply from contamination,” said Lynda DiMenna, president of New York American Water. “New York American Water asks you to remind your family, friends and neighbors to gather unwanted and expired medications and take advantage of this community event.”
Flushing prescription drugs and other controlled substances down the drain presents opportunities for contaminants to enter our waterways and soil, raising the potential of groundwater contamination, which can impact to our water supply. New York American Water is proud to offer a safe method for disposal with proper oversight by the Nassau County Police Department.
“Taking a few minutes out of your Saturday to drop off medications is a simple way to help protect our environment,” added DiMenna. “New York American Water has made the drop-off process extremely efficient. Participating customers will simply pull into the LIRR parking lot next to the Merrick Gazebo, hand off their medications to a New York American Water representative from the comfort of their car and then continue on with their day.”
