Proactive capital investments are crucial to maintaining service reliability, water quality and flow for fire protection
Kentucky American Water announced today its 2024 end-of-year investment total for system improvements. More than $83 million was invested to fund water and wastewater system upgrades across the company’s service areas throughout the year.
“We proactively and strategically invest in our water and wastewater infrastructure so that we can provide safe, clean, reliable water services to our customers,” said Rob Burton, president of Kentucky American Water. “The capital investments we make in our systems today are necessary to meet the needs of our communities today as well as into the future. They also allow us to continue to meet or surpass water quality and environmental standards.”
Kentucky American Water’s annual investments include upgrades and improvements made to the company’s water and wastewater infrastructure, including treatment plants, tanks, pump stations, pipes, fire hydrants and metering equipment.
System improvement highlights for 2024 include:
- Water Mains: A $46.7 million investment to install and replace over 20 miles of water main, which improves service reliability, pressure, fire protection and water quality for Kentucky American Water’s customers. This included $16 million of investment to replace old and undersized cast iron water main through the company’s Qualified Infrastructure Program (QIP).
- Valves and Fire Hydrants: A $2.8 million investment to replace existing valves and fire hydrants throughout the system, including multiple large valves on critical transmission mains.
- Service Lines and Meters: A $17 million investment to install new and replace existing meters and service lines across our service area.
- Water Treatment and Production System Improvements: A $16.5 million investment for improvements to facilities that treat water and wastewater. These improvements include state-of-the-art ultraviolet disinfection systems at two water treatment facilities, pumping and power upgrades, and facilities to improve residual handling processes.
