Missouri American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, has been providing clean, safe, reliable and affordable water and wastewater service since 1886. With more than 135 years of experience, the company has become a leader in the water and wastewater industry.

Serving approximately 1.6 million Missourians, we strictly follow regulations that are set by local authorities as well as federal standards set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). We understand how important water and wastewater service is to daily life. When you need it, you expect it to be there — and you expect it to be clean, safe, reliable and affordable.

Investing in Missouri

There are significant improvements needed to aging water and wastewater systems across Missouri and beyond. Providing high quality water and wastewater service is our top priority. Each year we invest hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade our systems to continue providing essential services in the communities we serve.

In 2025, the company plans to invest more than $500 million to improve and modernize its treatment facilities and distribution and collection systems. Customers and community leaders can view an interactive map of the company’s pipe replacement projects.

How MAW is removing lead service lines

Missouri American Water is working to identify and remove all lead service lines in the communities it serves, with $75 million dedicated to this effort in 2025. This includes both the customer-owned side and utility-owned side of the service line. To date, we have replaced nearly 18,000 lead or galvanized service lines with the goal of eliminating all by 2030.

Customers can learn more about the company’s lead service line program and support our efforts by reporting their service line material.

Nationally recognized for water quality

When it comes to complying with strict federal regulations for delivering safe, quality drinking water, we’ve consistently scored among the highest of all water companies. Statewide we perform more than 500,000 water quality tests annually, or about one per minute. Our team is at the forefront of research and compliance, tracking issues including lead and PFAS.

For 22 years, six of our treatment plants have been recognized with the Directors Award from the Partnership for Safe Water, a voluntary initiative developed by six prestigious drinking water organizations, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Helping communities solve water and wastewater challenges

Missouri American Water provides one in four Missourians with water and/or wastewater service. Our team of more than 700 industry professionals serves areas including St. Louis County, Warrensburg, St. Joseph, Joplin, Jefferson City and several other communities across the state. We understand that reliable water and wastewater service is critical to community health and prosperity.

Acquisition case studies

  1. In 2015, Missouri American Water purchased the wastewater system in the city of Arnold and has invested nearly $8 million dollars for system improvements. With the sale, the city retired its wastewater system debt, added Missouri American Water as a local taxpayer and used the sale proceeds for local community improvements including street and sidewalk upgrades.
  2. In 2018, Missouri American Water purchased the water and wastewater systems in the city of Lawson. The city was facing regulatory compliance issues with its wastewater system that would have required a significant rate increase to address. Since the acquisition, several key improvements have been made to the wastewater system in a cost-effective manner, including the addition of ultraviolet disinfection to the treatment process, construction and implementation of a new lift station and installation of remote monitoring. Approximately 3,000 feet of water main has been replaced and about 3,500 feet of new water main has been added.
  3. In 2022, Missouri American Water began providing water and wastewater service to the city of Eureka. Prior to the acquisition, the city found it increasingly difficult and costly to meet federal and state regulations and find personnel with the ability to operate the systems efficiently. Many residents complained about the aesthetic qualities of the city’s drinking water which was supplied by wells. With the acquisition, we welcomed the city employees as our own. Construction of a 5-mile pipeline to our St. Louis Treatment Plant is now complete. We are replacing aged meters with Advanced Meter Infrastructure. These investments will improve Eureka’s water quality while allowing for proactive leak detection.

Water is an integral part of life, and we take great pride in taking care of it.
