Pennsylvania American Water announces two projects to replace more than one mile of water main

MCMURRAY, Pa. (June 2, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of more than $1.7 million in water line project upgrades in the City of Connellsville and Redstone Township to improve reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions and increase water flow for firefighting.

“Providing reliable service to our customers means making continuous investments in our infrastructure,” said Tiffany Reed, senior manager of operations for Pennsylvania American Water. “We prioritize projects based on number of criteria, including the need for larger mains to handle system demands, age of existing pipe and history of main breaks or service interruptions.”

These projects will start in early June and involve installing more than 3,000 feet of new 12-inch ductile iron pipe along South Pittsburgh Street, from Cedar Avenue to Crawford Avenue. This will replace the existing water main, which was installed in 1904. Additionally, the company will install another 3,000 feet of 8-inch main ductile iron pipe along part of Twin Hills Road, from house number 355 to house number 225, replacing a mainline installed in the 1970s.

Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the main installation, including connecting all customer service lines to the new mains, along with final restoration and paving, later this summer.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. For more information, contact Pennsylvania American Water’s customer service center at 1-800-565-7292.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
