Pennsylvania American Water to Open Doors for Public Tour of Butler Wastewater Treatment Plant
Tour participants may sign up for free rain barrel workshop also to be offered by Pennsylvania Resources Council. Free, family-friendly event includes tours, workshops and interactive displays.
BUTLER, Pa. (May 30, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water invites customers to an open house and tour of its Butler Wastewater Treatment Plant on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event features a free rain barrel workshop by Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC), supported by a 2025 Water and Environment Grant from the American Water Charitable Foundation.
At the event, participants will see firsthand what happens to wastewater after it leaves their home and goes through the treatment process, see equipment used to maintain the wastewater collection system and learn how to practice watershed protection and conservation. Customers will also have the opportunity to talk with Pennsylvania American Water’s local management team and wastewater treatment professionals and ask questions about the service they receive.
“Our Butler Wastewater team is proud to serve more than 15,000 customer connections across 32.5 square miles,” said Pennsylvania American Wastewater Operations Manager Michelle Cavallo. “This open house will provide our customers with a unique opportunity to learn more about the wastewater treatment process and our commitment to Butler County.”
Visitors of all ages will be offered guided outdoor walking tours at this rain-or-shine, no-cost event.
The open house also will feature:
- Rain barrel workshop by PRC (Pre-registration required. Click here.)
- Touch-a-truck
- Hydrovac and camera displays
- A microscopic look at wastewater treatment
- Dye test demonstration
"Pennsylvania Resources Council and Pennsylvania American Water are aligned in promoting water conservation and stormwater management," said PRC Environmental Education Coordinator Laura Blood. "This is a unique opportunity to learn how Butler's wastewater is treated and what residents can do to minimize stormwater runoff, both of which are important to watershed protection."
The plant is located at 100 Litman Road in Butler. Those who plan to take the tour should wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear and long pants. Large bags and personal items should be left in secured vehicles. Attendees will be asked to sign in, and a parent or guardian must accompany and be responsible for children under 18 years of age.
