Pennsylvania American Water to Replace More than 350 Lead Service Lines in Pittsburgh and Mt. Oliver
Neighborhood inspections to identify lead pipes kick off June 16 as part of replacement initiative.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (June 9, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today that it will soon begin replacing approximately 357 lead service lines that have been identified in the City of Pittsburgh and Mt. Oliver Borough. This project, which starts mid-June, is funded by a $1.6 million low-interest loan and a $3.3 million grant from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST).

Starting June 16, contractors will canvass Pittsburgh’s 29th Ward and Mt. Oliver Borough to identify unknown service line materials. They will wear high-visibility vests and contractor ID badges. If lead or galvanized steel lines are found, customers will receive information on replacing them at no direct cost. Replacements will begin as lead lines are identified.
Replacement of all lead service lines will provide direct water quality improvements to customers and is consistent with regulatory and Pennsylvania American Water initiatives to eliminate lead service lines from the public water supply system.

Any customer can self-report their service line material online. To complete the service line inventory report from a phone or tablet, customers will need to:
1.) Enter their contact information,
2.) Identify their service line material and
3.) Upload a picture of their service line.
