Virginia American Water Invests $42 Million in System Upgrades Statewide in 2024

Proactive capital investments are important to maintaining service reliability, water quality and flow for fire protection

Alexandria, VA – March 24, 2025 – Virginia American Water announced today that its 2024 investments in water and wastewater system upgrades totaled more than $42 million throughout its service areas.

“Our customers in Virginia count on us to consistently provide safe, reliable water and wastewater service,” said Laura Runkle, president, Virginia American Water. “One way we do that is by continuously making significant improvements and upgrades to our infrastructure. We do this because we care about our customers, and we have a commitment to providing high-quality service throughout the communities we serve.”

Virginia American Water’s annual investments include upgrades and improvements to the company’s water and wastewater infrastructure, including treatment plants, tanks, pump stations, pipes, fire hydrants and metering equipment.

System improvement highlights for 2024 include:

  • Water Mains: A $13.3 million investment to install, replace or rehabilitate more than 27,456 feet of aging water main. Pipe improvement projects help ensure water service reliability and increase water flows for household use and firefighting.
  • Service Lines: A $3.5 million investment to replace aging water service lines and sewer laterals. This includes the replacement of over 200 lead service lines as a part of Virginia American Water’s commitment to eliminate lead in our distribution system.
  • Water Treatment and Production System Improvements: A $11.1 million investment at drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities, including:
    • Hopewell Water Treatment Plant
    • Prince William Wastewater Section 1 Treatment Plant
    • Prince William Wastewater Section 8 Treatment Plant
    • Groundwater wells in the Northern Neck
    • Smoketown Pump Station in Prince William
    • Braddock Road Pump Station in Alexandria
  • Tanks/Storage: A $2.9M investment to rehabilitate and replace water storage tanks, including:
    • Payne Street Tank in Alexandria
    • Elevated Storage Tank in Hopewell
    • Adams Grove Hydropneumatic Tank in the Northern Neck
    • Darl Well Hydropneumatic Tank in the Northern Neck
  • Water Meters: A $5.2M investment to install and upgrade to advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technology across our service areas.

In addition, Virginia American Water invested over $1.6 million on the installation and replacement of fire hydrants, valves and manholes throughout its water and wastewater distribution systems.
