Alexandria, Va. (August 24, 2017) – Virginia American Water is preparing to replace 420 feet of aging 2-inch cast iron main (installed in 1956) along Moody Court and Benning Court in the City of Alexandria. The existing pipe has reached the end of its useful life and will be replaced with new ductile iron pipe.
The main replacement project also includes replacing utility-owned service lines along the pipeline route. These improvements will enhance water service reliability and water flows for household consumption and firefighting.
“Virginia American Water is proactively working to replace the aging water infrastructure in the City of Alexandria,” said Barry Suits, Virginia American Water president. “This project in Alexandria’s west end represents a critical investment for the company in support of our commitment to provide our customers with safe, reliable water service.”
Virginia American Water’s contractor, Utilities Unlimited, will begin work the week of August 28. The project is expected to be finished in January 2018, weather permitting. Street paving and restoration will be completed at the end of the project.
Work hours will be from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday – Friday. Weekend and evening work is not expected unless required to maintain the project schedule. Sections of each street may be closed during work hours, but one traffic lane will remain open. Residents will have access to Moody and Benning at all times.
During the project, some residents may experience a temporary service interruption, which typically lasts approximately one hour. While the new main is placed into service, water may be slightly discolored. If this happens, customers are encouraged to run the water until it is clear.
Virginia American Water is committed to the safety of its employees and contractors, and advises pedestrians to take caution near work sites.
