New Jersey American Water to Repair Leak on 48-inch Water Transmission Main

Repair to have traffic impact but no expected impact to customers’ water service

CAMDEN, N.J. February 13, 2024 – New Jersey American Water is preparing to repair a leak in a 48-inch water transmission main on Springdale Road in Cherry Hill between Route 70 and Kresson Road beginning February 20. This critical pipeline supplies water to customers in several towns throughout Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem Counties.

New Jersey American Water identified the leak through the use of acoustic leak detection technology, which enabled company engineers to “hear” the water coming out of the deeply buried pipe.

“Due to the location of the leak, we believe there will be no impact to our customers’ water service,” said David Forcinito, Senior Director of South Operations, New Jersey American Water. “While there will be an impact to regular traffic patterns in this area, being able to plan a leak repair instead of reacting to a large break in a pipe of this size helps us save time and resources, minimize disruption to the community, and better serve our customers.”

New Jersey American Water’s local, qualified contractor, Pioneer Pipe Contractors, Inc. will begin site preparation on February 19, and construction is expected to start on February 20. The project is expected to be completed sometime between February 23 and 29, depending on the complexity of the repair.

Customers are not expected to experience any changes in their water service throughout the duration of the repair. The company is working with local officials to coordinate traffic plans. Springdale Road will be closed at Kresson Road for northbound traffic, except for residents of Justa Lane, and Springdale Road at Route 70 will be open for southbound traffic only. People who must travel in this area are asked to drive carefully when near the work zone or seek an alternate route if possible.
