Camden & Parts of Pennsauken Lead Service Line Replacement Program Canvassing
New Jersey American Water will be launching our Lead Service Line Replacement Program in the company's service areas in Camden with support of our qualified contractor, CDM Smith, beginning on or about February 12, 2024. The first part of this program is to inspect and identify the material of our customer’s water service line.
The service line is the pipe that connects your home to the water main in the street. A portion of the service line to your residence is owned by New Jersey American Water, while the homeowner owns the other portion. (See Diagram)
To help identify the material of the customer-side service line, our qualified contractor, CDM Smith, will be canvassing homes with customer-side service lines listed as unknown in the community and performing in-house inspections.
Customers with unknown customer-side servivce lines are encouraged to schedule an appointment online or by calling the CDM Smith team at 732-590-4700. You can see what our records indicate for your customer-side service line material by searching your address on our inventory map.
Our qualified contractors will carry official company photo I.D. badges and wear logoed, high visibility vests. Our employees and contractors never collect money or credit card information from customers in the field.
After canvassing has been completed, crews will begin service line replacements of identified lead service lines.
If you know the material of your service line, please self-identify using our online mapping tool. Additional information can be found online here.
At New Jersey American Water, providing safe, reliable water service is our top priority. Each year, we invest hundreds of millions of dollars into our water infrastructure so that we can continue to provide safe and reliable water service to you. In July 2021, New Jersey enacted a law that requires all water providers to replace utility-owned and customer-owned lead service lines by 2031. While the company routinely tests for lead in drinking water and works to meet standards for lead through the use of corrosion inhibitors, we are committed to meeting this goal of replacing all lead service lines by the deadline.

Always be aware and take precautions when approached by someone who says they are a utility worker:
- Always ask for a company-issued photo ID. New Jersey American Water employees carry company-issued photo ID badges.
- Look for the logo. All New Jersey American Water service personnel wear uniforms and drive company-branded vehicles with the company logo. At times, New Jersey American Water uses contracted services from other trusted companies, and those companies will have branded vehicles and identification as well.
- Never give cash. Our employees and contractors never collect money or credit card information from customers in the field.
- If you suspect someone may be a utility imposter, close and lock your door, and call 911. You can also call New Jersey American Water at 1-800-272-1325 to report the incident and confirm whether service work is scheduled in the area.
We care about our customers’ safety. Take the time to ensure that the utility representative at your door is a legitimate employee on official utility business. We don’t mind the wait. We believe it’s worth the peace of mind for our customers.
