Six organizations receive funding to help protect water resources in West Virginia through annual grant program

West Virginia American Water today announced that six recipients received funding through the company’s 2016 Environmental Grant Program. The program supports innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and/or groundwater supplies through partnerships within West Virginia American Water’s service territory.

In early April, a committee of nine West Virginia American Water representatives reviewed and judged a host of competitive applications from deserving programs and initiatives across the state. Six organizations were chosen to receive $10,000 in total funding for their water education, protection and preservation efforts. Awardees include:

  • Capitol Conservation District ($2,500) for their Soil Tunnel Trailer
  • Davis Creek Watershed Association ($1,750) to purchase data loggers to monitor water quality
  • Ernie Nester Chapter Trout Unlimited ($650) for temperature monitoring in Davis Creek and Trace Fork
  • Marshall University ($1,400) for the Creek Geek watershed education program
  • Morris Creek Watershed Association ($1,700) for Japanese Knotweed eradication
  • Spruce Fork Community Advisory Panel ($2,000) for the Rockhouse Lake revitalization project

“West Virginia American Water is committed to working with community partners to protect our water resources,” said Jeffrey McIntyre, president of West Virginia American Water. “Through investments in community led projects and initiatives, our goal is to help bring watershed protection and education to the forefront of community discussion. Everyone plays a role in caring for our most valuable resource.”
